History

São Gonçalo was formally established as an independent parish in the 16th century (around 1558). Named after Saint Gonçalo of Amarante, the area was historically dominated by agriculture, covered in sugarcane plantations, vineyards and the characteristic terraced farmlands (poios). During the 18th and 19th centuries, wealthy Madeiran families and British merchants built country houses (quintas) here to escape the summer heat down by the harbour. Today, historic estates such as Quinta do Palheiro preserve this aristocratic heritage.
